George A. Kontogiannos

Resume – Georgios An. Kontogiannos

My name is Georgios Kontogiannos, son of Anastasios Kontogiannos. I come from Archangelos, Rhodes, and in recent years my life has been divided between Crete and Rhodes.
In Crete, I studied at the Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of Heraklion, in the Department of Accounting and Finance. At the same time, I attended the four-year Icon Painting School of Saint Titus, where, under the guidance and valuable advice of the renowned iconographer Georgios Cheirakakis, I delved deeper into this sacred and mystical art.
I inherited my talent for painting from my grandfather, Georgios Kontogiannos, who, together with Anastasios Sarikas, decorated the interiors of several churches in Rhodes, such as the parish church of Archangelos, the Church of Archangel Michael, the Church of Panagia Tsambika, the Church of Saint George in Malona, and the Church of the Holy Cross in Apollona.
I was initiated into the art of iconography by the late Nikolaos S. Afantenos, the teacher, who, with fatherly love, passed on his knowledge of this art to me.
While attending the Icon Painting School, I worked alongside the school's teacher, Mr. Cheirakakis. Later, I worked in the offices of the Holy Metropolis of Gortyna and Arcadia in Heraklion as an accountant. Today, I am professionally engaged in iconography, following the standards of the “Cretan School of Hagiography” and contributing to the preservation of the Byzantine tradition.

Additionally, for the past four (4) years, I have been teaching hagiography to adult classes at the Cultural Center – Communication and Educational Foundation of the Holy Metropolis of Gortyna and Arcadia.
